What is adsvertising ?

Is it something to be regarded as a work of beauty or art? Is it clever slogans or amusing prose? Is it workmanship to be judged for an award or recognition?

It’s none of the above.

Advertising is salesmanship multiplied.

Nothing more.

And advertising copy, or copywriting, is salesmanship in print.

The purpose of a copywriter’s job is to sell. Period.

The selling is accomplished by persuasion with the written word, much like a television commercial sells (if done properly) by persuading with visuals and audio.

As Claude Hopkins wrote in his timeless classic, Scientific Advertising:

“To properly understand advertising or to learn even its rudiments one must start with the right conception. Advertising is salesmanship. Its principles are the principles of salesmanship. Successes and failures in both lines are due to like causes. Thus every advertising question should be answered by the salesman's standards.

“Let us emphasize that point. The only purpose of advertising is to make sales. It is profitable or unprofitable according to its actual sales.

“It is not for general effect. It is not to keep your name before the people. It is not primarily to aid your other salesmen. Treat it as a salesman. Force it to justify itself. Compare it with other salesmen. Figure its cost and result. Accept no excuses which good salesmen do not make. Then you will not go far wrong.

“The difference is only in degree. Advertising is multiplied salesmanship. It may appeal to thousands while the salesman talks to one. It involves a corresponding cost. Some people spend $10 per word on an average advertisement. Therefore every ad should be a super-salesman.

“A salesman's mistake may cost little. An advertiser’s mistake may cost a thousand times that much. Be more cautious, more exacting, therefore. A mediocre salesman may affect a small part of your trade. Mediocre advertising affects all of your trade.”

These points are as true today as they were when they were written nearly one hundred years ago!

So the goal then becomes: how can we make our advertising as effective as possible.

The answer is to test. Test again. And then test some more.

If ad “A” receives a two percent response rate, and ad “B” receives three percent, then we can deduce that ad “B” will continue to outperform ad “A” on a larger scale.

Testing takes time, however, and can be expensive if not kept in check. Therefore, it’s ideal to start with some proven tested known ideas and work from there.

For example, if testing has shown for decades or more that targeted advertising significantly outperforms untargeted advertising (and it does), then we can start with that assumption and go from there.

If we know based on test results that crafting an ad that speaks directly to an individual performs better than addressing the masses (again, it does), then it makes little sense to start testing with the assumption that it does not. This is common sense.

So it stands to reason that knowing some basic rules or techniques about writing effective copy is in order. Test results will always trump everything, but it’s better to have a starting point before you test.

So this starting point is the essence of this book.

The ten tips expressed here have been generally time-tested and known to be effective.

But I can’t emphasize enough that when using these techniques, you should always test them before rolling out a large (and expensive) campaign.

Sometimes a little tweak here or there is all that is needed to increase response rates dramatically.

How To Use Google To Find And Create Content For Your Product Outline

Most people know about Google.com as the largest search engine in the world… however, few realize how powerful it is as a research tool.

The key is knowing how to tap into Google’s research powers. One of the best ways to find content is by using the search string called “allinurl”.

You can go to Google.com and type in allinurl:[keyphrase] – and search its database for sites that have that keyphrase in their URL, either in the domain name or in a file name.

For example, I could use something like:

allinurl: dog name articles
allinurl: dog name
allinurl: beagle dog names

You should find some really good content using this method. Let’s check out the real world examples and take a look at what we would find.

#1) allinurl: dog name articles

· “A Dog Name is Something To Be Chosen Carefully”

· “5 tips for finding the right name”

· “Puppy dog name meanings”

Looks like great content for the book. Simply decide which section (from your outline) would be the appropriate section for it to go in.

Note: If you really want to use the content but don’t currently have a section devoted to it, you want to consider adding one.

Now for the important question… HOW can you organize your search findings? Glad you asked…

Here’s an example of a way to organize your content:

Put the name of your idea and the Outline Section at the top.

In the section below put…

Name/Title: The name and/or title of the content you’ve found

Link: URL to the content

Expert (Owner): Who wrote the content

Type: Is the content text, audio, video, etc.

If you have 6 sections to your outline, you should have 6 of these sheets with content information – one for each section.

This way you can quickly see how much content you’ve accumulated for each section. Once you decide you have enough content in a certain section you can stop searching and move on to the other sections in your outline.

After collecting all the content you want for your product, you have two options.

#1) You can contact the content owner and ask permission to include their content in your product. You can do this whether it’s text, audio, video, etc.

The benefit of including other expert’s content is that when it comes time to market it you’ve got ‘built-in’ partners to help promote it.

#2) You can use the collected content as a template and rewrite it.

Take each paragraph, consider what it’s saying and then rewrite the idea in your own words… in your ‘voice’. It’s easier to edit than stare at a blank white page and start from scratch.

Although initially I was 100% committed to writing my own content, I’ve come to realize the power and the effectiveness of using existing content from the experts.

Unless you absolutely have to have the entire product be your words, I’d suggest using expert content along with some of your own content mixed in.

Alexa toolbar : generate traffic from this tool

Not a traffic powerhouse, but worth a look if you're involved in internet marketing as a niche.
Traffic generated via Alexa will come from the Alexa Toolbar. The Alexa Toolbar sits within the browser and provides information on each visited site.

Our interest here is the “related links” feature. Website owners manually list their urls with Alexa. Part of the listing process includes the option of specifying “related links” to other sites similar to your own.

But here's the trick:

you can visit Alexa as an anonymous user and look up data on any site you want, and you can specify links you believe should be added to that site's “related links” information.
This allows you to associate your url with that of, say, a higher traffic site in your niche – which may be owned by a jv partner or a competitor.

Provided there aren't dozens of other urls already specified in the related links database for a given site, visitors who have the Alexa Toolbar installed should see your link listed as a related site.
